That which cannot be seen can still be very real. It is true, however, that whether or not you are labelled as “depressed” will be determined, in large part, by matching the words that you use to describe yourself against the categories listed in the DSM. For severely ill patients, whose behaviour is so affected by their illness that it can be detected by the untrained eye, this isn’t an issue. Nearly 15 years ago, we were shown a video of patient-psychiatrist interactions to familiarise us with the diseases we were investigating.
